Background
First impressions last.
For foreign employees joining the Danish labour market the initial perception of Danes and the Danish workplace is often far from positive - Reserved, cold and introvert are typical first impressions. A laid-back, relaxed managerial approach is cited as problematic by some, together with a distrust of collective decision-making and a bewilderment of the short working day!
Furthermore, at work and in their spare-time foreign employees are often given the cold shoulder, made to feel excluded from Danish society, frequently leading to their premature departure. This can be expensive for Danish companies where the cost of expat failure is ½ million kroner and above, and, secondly, in the long-term, expensive for Denmark.
